The Edina 4th of July Parade Committee is pleased to announce that the theme of the 2012 parade will be Broad Stripes & Bright Stars. This theme celebrates our national heritage with the inspiring words of The Star Spangled Banner, describing our flag flying over Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. The lyrics of The Star Spangled Banner come from "Defence of Fort McHenry", a poem written in 1814 by the 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet, Francis Scott Key, after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British Royal Navy ships in the Chesepeake Bay during the Battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812.
The Star Spangled Banner was made the national anthem on March 3, 1931.
